Organising against the household and water taxes – Ballyfermot

The Campaign Against the Household and Water Taxes in this area is made up of local residents, trade unionists and members of éirígí, the Workers Solidarity Movement, the Workers Party and the People Before Profit Alliance.

Over the last number of weeks éirígí Ballyfermot has been centrally involved in establishing the Campaign Against the Household and Water Taxes in Ballyfermot, Chapelizod and Inchicore.

Campaigning is ongoing on an almost daily basis and includes postering, leafleting, canvassing door to door, campaign stalls and local meetings.

Cllr. Louise Minihan of éirígí addressed several well-attended public meetings in Ballyfermot, Chapelizod, Drimnagh, Inchicore and Killinarden in Tallaght. These public meetings led to local campaign groups being launched in each  area, and our activists are now centrally involved in driving the campaign on the ground.

Since the public meetings local activists have been involved in leafleting and canvassing door to door in Ballyfermot, Chapelizod and Inchicore, where the campaign has received a great response so far. Canvassing has proved particularly successful in these areas and has helped to identify more people willing to get involved.

‘We’re Not Paying the Household Tax’ posters are clearly visible in the windows of houses across the area’s that have been canvassed. These posters help give the campaign a real sense of momentum in the local area and are a great way of building solidarity and support on a street by street basis.

The weekly  éirígí campaigns and information stall has also been a great tool in organising the local campaign and has allowed us collect hundreds of signatures on a petition against the home tax, distribute hundreds of pieces of campaign literature and to engage with the people of Ballyfermot about the taxes and the non-registration and non-payment campaign. The stall also provides a great opportunity for people join the campaign and sign up for membership.

In the coming weeks the campaign will be brought to every door in the area.We are currently building for a day of action across the state on February 25th.  More information will be posted following this weeks local campaign activist meeting.
